You Don’t Need A Mistletoe

Made this story to get rid of my writer’s block and just… write something. Hahaha. It’s a rushed story, and I have to admit, there are errors and typos, but hey, it did help me get my writing spark back. Haha. Sometimes I think when we get writer’s block, we should just lie back, relax, and write without worrying about anything else in the world. And after that, the ideas will just come naturally. Our brains work that way, I think.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this short story of mine!

“Sis! You have a visitor!” a brown-haired 10-year-old boy calls out to an older girl who is currently washing the dishes in the kitchen.

Lumina Duval frowns and glances at Vince, her brother, who is busy playing his favorite videogames again.

“Mind opening the door for me then?”

Vince looks at her incredulously and pouts. “I do mind.”

The 17-year-old sighs, inwardly muttering about her pesky little brother. She wipes her hands on her apron, glancing at the wall clock in the kitchen. “Play time ends in an hour.”

She hears the sound of something dropping to the floor — which she suspects is the video game controller– as the boy gets up with a start, shock evident on his face. “What?!”

His sister just smirks and puts a finger to her lips. “Shh, we have a visitor.”

Vince starts complaining, only to be cut off by Lumina opening the door.

It opens to reveal a light-haired boy of average height , who was looking down on his feet as he waited for the door to open. Noticing that the door is already open, he looks up at the door expectantly. His blue eyes lighten up when he sees Lumina’s pleasantly surprised face staring back at him.

The truth is, she hasn’t seen Landice Rosenfeld, her boy best friend, for a few weeks now. Well, until today that is. The Rosenfelds had gone on a month-long summer vacation overseas. Lumina secretly envied Landice a little for all the beaches and summer getaways his family has been to, but on the other hand, she wished that he would just stay with her all the time. Not that she has become super dependent on him, of course.

It’s just that, she always misses him terribly whenever he’s away.

Landice blushes, suddenly conscious of Lumina’s dreamy stare. “Wh-what’s wrong? Is there something on my face?”

He puts a hand on his cheek, feeling his pale skin. Lumina laughs softly and gently pulls it away, still staring as her best friend turns an even redder color.

They end up staring at each other for a few more seconds, before Lumina opens the door wider for Landice to come inside.

She smiles as her boy best friend approaches and slowly enters their house. He looks around nervously and glances at Lumina.

“Hey, what’s up?” she asks, raising an eyebrow at him suspiciously.

Landice shakes his head. “Nothing. I just have nothing to do, that’s all.”

The brunette smiled naughtily, “Oh, just admit it Lance, you’ve missed me. Haven’t you?”

The boy flinches as his face turns beet red. He stares at the brunette for a few more seconds before clearing his throat. “Nein, fraulein. Why would I admit something like that?”

Lumina’s green eyes twinkle with amusement. She skips closer to him and smiles wider. “Well of course you would, it’s the truth, isn’t it?”

She pushes her face closer to his and grins. “You just missed me, Landice Rosenfeld.”Landice shakes his head in defiance and pouts. “It’s been weeks, not months. Why would I miss you?”

Lumina crosses her arms, pretending to be upset. “There’s no use denying it. I can see it on your face. Plain as the sky.”

“Plain as the sky? What?”

“Yes. Plain as the sky. Clear as the sun.”

Where did she get all those incorrect expressions? Landice chuckles, raising an eyebrow. “Oh really now, Lumi? You think I missed you?”

“Uh-huh.” You’re always too shy to say it, but I know you always miss me too.

“So, you want me to say that to your face?”

“Yes.” she smiles triumphantly. Just as much as I miss you.

Landice moves closer to her, enough to let her smell his fragrant, musky perfume. Well, what if I did?”

The brunette clasps her hands together, grinning devilishly. I’ve got you now. “Then you have to let me know!”

“I suppose I could but… how?” Landice smirks, and Lumina’s eyes widen as she sees the unfamiliar smile. He slowly moves closer to her, and the brunette realizes that he’s trapped her against the wall.

“What’s that…?” she giggles nervously, suddenly feeling self-conscious all of a sudden. Landice is your best friend, dummy! You’ve been in closer situations before!

Her fast-beating heart rings in her ears as Landice lowers his face slightly.

“Why don’t I just show you then, Lumina Duval?” he smiles again, this time his soft, sweet smile that always makes her heart melt. You don’t need a mistletoe to do this…

Lumina slowly closes her eyes as she feels Landice’s move closer… and closer…

“Sis!”

A door slams, and the two best friends immediately move away in shock. Their faces both beet red, Landice and Lumina curiously look at Vince as the latter stands in front of them with his small arms crossed in front of his chest.

“Sis, why are you here playing with Lance when you told me you’d be making cookies?!” he mutters angrily, tapping his foot.

“Wh-wh-wha– um, w-w-wait… uh, V-vince, we… um…” Lumina stutters, unable to find words. She glances at Landice who currently has his head bowed low, hiding his blushing face.

“Play time is almost over. I wanna eat cookies while playing…” Vince pouts, doing a puppy-dog-eyes look. “Pretty please sis? Please? Please? In 15 minutes?”

The brunette just nods.

Vince  smiles happily, turning around and going for the door. “Okay! I won’t disturb you two then.”

As the younger boy closes the door behind him, Lumina turns back to Landice. Shyly twirling a lock of hair around her fingers, she nudges her best friend.

“Um… where were we?”

Landice smiles.
