2017 New Year’s Resolutions: Dev Blog Edition

Happy new year guys!

I can’t believe it’s already 2017… oh my, how fast time flies!

And of course, it’s time for that age-old tradition almost everyone does every beginning of the year… New Year’s Resolutions!

Ran’s New Year’s Resolutions: Dev Blog Edition

  • update this blog more frequently
  • release at least one new game this year
  • try the PWYW feature in itch.io (oh my!)
  • do more writing commissions (that I can handle)
  • get a custom domain name!

Whew… now that I think about it, my goals for this year are pretty lofty, but I’m completely determined to check all of these off my list by the end of 2017.

For the first one, that’s mainly to keep me accountable for my work. I literally can’t afford to slack off this year, because I’ve got a whole slew of goals to achieve – including those not related to VN work, such as maintaining my current academic standing in school) Plus, this will help me be more disciplined this year, which is one of my general 2017 life goals as well.

For the second one, well… I still feel bad about not releasing a visual novel for 2015… which is why I released three in 2016. Nevertheless, I hope to finally start on one pet project of mine, release it this year, and…

For the third one, try using the ‘Pay What You Want’ feature on itch.io. I don’t have the budget (nor the liberty to spend money haha) to commission stuff as of now, so maybe I’m just going to buy copyright-free but ready-made materials for my visual novel. This is more about taking the risk and overcoming my fear of selling my work, hahaha, than about actually earning from it. I’ve got a loooong way to go, and this is my own way of seeing if I’m ready to make it.

For the fourth one, I hope to get more writing commissions this year. Usually I only take like one project at a time over a long period, but this time, I believe I’m ready to take multiple projects (like 2-3 at a time) and really discipline myself into committing to all of them. I tried it in 2016, actually! I had writing commissions yet still managed (thank Heavens) to release three games, AND co-write another game. Uh-huh, uh-huh. It’s all about breaking out of my comfort zone, I think, and 2017 is definitely, definitely the time for that.

For the fifth one, well… it has always been a dream of mine, so… if I get enough commissions this year, haha, maybe I can take some extra money out to pay for self-hosting or even just a custom blog name for now.

Whew, so that’s it for my 2017 New Year’s Resolutions! I’ve got a lot, to be honest, but I’m feeling confident that I’ll reach them. Hehe. It’s all about faith sometimes, you know?

What about you guys? What do you want to achieve this 2017? Feel free to comment below and let’s reach our goals together!
